The main gate of the monstrosity in Oswiecim also as known as Auschwitz I. The gate above says Arbeit macht frei meaning "work brings freedom" or "work shall set you free".
Auschwitz, the concentration camp was established in 1940 originally for the Polish political prisoners. As time passed, the Nazis began to deport mainly Jews. Initially there were 20 buildings but after 3 years the camp contained 28 buildings and total of up to 20,000 prisoners at a time.
People were killed by slow extermination by hunger, exhausting work, chemical experiments by being injected toxic into their bodies, quick death by shots, and of course so many of them were killed by gas.
18 blocks are open for public and used for museum display.
The crematorium and gas chamber. This building was rebuild. A lot of objects were destroyed by the SS obliterating the traces of their crimes. During the time this gas chamber was in operational from 1941 to 1942, about 60,000 people were killed.
All personal belongings brought to the camp as well all the belongings from murdered victims were reused and kept in the camp. Which includes, bags, clothes, teeth brushes, dishes, glasses, shoes, cans, and etc. There was a room of suite cases.
Death Wall. Thousands of prisoners, mostly Polish were shot and killed here.
Auschwitz II. About 175 hectares and contained about 300 buildings. The number of total prisoners reached 100,000. The prisoners were plagued by a lack of water and terrible conditions.
The remains of camps. As I mention earlier, SS destroyed most of buildings and only thing you can see now are the foundations and chimneys.
The main entrance to Auschwitz II, or so-called "Death Gate". When prisoners were transported here they were separated in groups. 75% of them were killed within few hours of arrival who were women, elderly, and children. Another group was used as slave labour.
The remains of crematorium. More than 20,000 people could be gassed and cremated each day. The number of people died here is about 1.1 to 1.6 million however the number is still uncertain.
Right next to the crematoriums. The pond behind was used to dump human ashes and the entire area is a grave site.
Inside of a brick barrack.
Closer look of a remain of camp.
